Teen Poker Overview

Teen Poker the movie is an eagerly awaited Bollywood Film starring the Bollywood Icon, Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley, the actor who played Gandhi in the award winning movie of the same name. The film is directed by Leena Yadav and produced by Ambika Hinduja, the daughter of one of the billionaire Hinduja brothers under her serendipity films banner.

The movie seems to be based upon the Hollywood movie 21 about a MIT professor who recruits his best students to count cards in Las Vegas Casinos thereby earning a lot of money. The original film 21 starring Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne was based upon the book “Bringing Down The House” by Ben Mezrich or was it Busting Vegas?. Recently the discovery channel has a two hour documentary on the story called Breaking Vegas.

Teen Poker, the film seems to be a copy of the movie 21 but is based in the college town of Cambridge, UK and is based around London Casinos also the game is not Blackjack but Teen . I understand that it is also shot in Pune. I expect the plot to be very similar to 21 with a few changes to the storyline. Although Ms. Yadav denies this and stated “‘I don’t deny the two films sound similar although I haven’t seen ’21′. My script was written long before ’21′ was released. So there’s no question of me being inspired by the film”

Teen has Ben Kingsley playing Perci Trachtenberg (Ben Kingsley), one of the greatest living mathematicians of the world. Amitabh Bachchan plays Venkat Subramaniam, a reclusive math genius from India.

The film casts Madhavan, Siddharth Kher, and newcomers Dhruv Ganesh, Vaibhav Talwar as students. It also stars Raima Sen and Sharaddha Kapoor – Shakti Kapoor’s daughter as students. Maria Gomez, a Brazilian model has an item number in the Niyat song. Apparently she’s currently untracable.

Saira Mohan, the Canadian born, Indian, French and Irish supermodel plays a seductress. You can’t have high stakes casino scenes without a beautiful woman or two thrown in!

Apparantley, Richard Gere makes a guest appearance as does Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Shakti Kapoor and several other Hollywood and Bollywood stars. The producers are keeping a tight lid on the special appreances and the storyline to maintain an element of surprise.

Teen is due for a Feb 26 2010 release.

I will be posting a review of Teen as soon as I see it. It will be the first day first show!

Per the Official Teen website “Venkat is a genius who is on the verge of cracking a theory that could redefine the principles of probability and randomness. Encouraged to test his theory in real life, Venkat trains five of his brightest protégées (Madhavan, Siddharth Kher, and newcomers Dhruv Ganesh, Vaibhav Talwar and Shraddha Kapoor) for high-stake gambling.

Meanwhile, Perci (Ben Kingsley) understands that Venkat’s new theory could have far reaching implication on mathematics and sciences. It’s a theory that questions the idea of what is fate and what is random.

A knowledge that can change the world can be dangerous in wrong hands. Soon, the experiment Venkat embarks on spirals into a deadly game beyond his control.”

Teen Poker – Know When to Fold’em: Warning Signs of a Teen Gambling Problem

Fueled by the allure of televised poker tournaments with $ 5 million payouts, teens are organizing their own poker games with winning pots ranging from a few coins to hundreds of dollars. Parents, teens and educators need to know that teens are at 2-3 times the risk of adults for developing a gambling problem and how to recognize signs that a teen may be on the rocky road to a gambling addiction.

According to Elizabeth George, director, North American Training Institute, a Minnesota-based educational institute that specializes in youth and gambling addiction, “It is important for parents and teachers to know the signs of their child or a student developing an addiction to gambling. With the escalation of teens playing poker, public awareness and education about gambling problems is the key to wise decision-making for parents – and teens.”

An addiction to gambling is often called the hidden addiction because, unlike alcohol or drug problems, there are few observable signs. To assist teens, as well as parents and educators identify signs of a gambling problem, the NATI has developed a list of questions. They include:

A   Do you prevent your family and friends from knowing how much you play poker?

A   Do you play poker with money that is supposed to be used for other reasons like lunches, clothing, car insurance or saving for college?

A   Do you often gamble longer than you wanted to and lose more money than you intended?

A   Is poker the main source of what you do to feel good about yourself?

A   Do you ever lie about whether you play poker or how much you lose?

A   Do you miss school or other important events due to gambling?

A   Have you ever stolen money or property in order to play poker or pay gambling debts?
